BVSD is at a crossroads: enrollment has fallen by more than 5,000 students since 2017, and the district is closing and consolidating schools to match. The world is at a crossroads too — AI is changing what's actually worth a school day, and the places that recalibrate first will define what education looks like next, not just get through the next enrollment cycle.
Those two crossroads meet at exactly one moment: the Board's vote on September 22. Mesa Innovation School is a bet that one of the buildings in that vote can answer both.
Not a charter, not a voucher — a public, free, lottery-admitted focus school, funded and governed like any other BVSD school, sized to what it will actually enroll rather than the building's full capacity.
Mastery, teacher-led first
New content taught directly by a licensed teacher, then practiced on adaptive software built in-house, checked against external tests — not solo self-paced screen time, which the evidence shows is the weaker approach.
Outdoor education, weekly
Foothills trails, Boulder Creek, OSMP, and CU's research community, used for real place-based science and stewardship — two afternoons a week, led by trained specialists, not a field trip.
Students build and launch
Sustained, cohort-based mentor relationships with Boulder's own founders and scientists, not rotating guest visits — not a metaphor at middle and high school age.
